FBI Warns of Major Chinese Cyber Espionage Campaign Targeting U.S. Telecommunications

The FBI has issued a warning about a cyber espionage campaign, labeled “Salt Typhoon,” linked to Chinese state-sponsored hackers.

The breach targets U.S. telecommunications networks, potentially allowing hackers to intercept private text messages and phone calls of American citizens, including those in government and politics.

The FBI advises using encrypted messaging apps like Signal and WhatsApp to secure communications.

Text messages between iPhones and Android devices lack full encryption and are particularly vulnerable to interception.

Telecom companies are urged to strengthen security measures to prevent further breaches. This campaign follows other incidents attributed to Chinese hacking groups targeting critical U.S. infrastructure.

What to do if you plan to visit USA in the next days:

  • Use end-to-end encrypted apps for sensitive communication.
  • Avoid relying on standard text messaging systems.
  • Telecom providers should implement advanced encryption protocols.

The FBI continues to investigate and work with private companies to counter these threats.
