Romania Adopts National Strategy for Quantum Technologies

The Romanian government has recently adopted a national strategy for quantum technologies, set to guide the country’s efforts in this field over the next five years. This move follows the inclusion of quantum technologies as a strategic research program in Romania’s National Plan for Research, Development, and Innovation 2022-2027 (PNCDI4) at the end of last year.

Minister of Research, Innovation, and Digitalization Bogdan Ivan highlighted the immense potential of quantum computing, noting that quantum computers can perform calculations in 3 minutes that would take classical computers 10,000 years to process.

Romania’s strategy capitalizes on the country’s main advantage: its highly skilled human resources in exact sciences, particularly physics and IT, which form the foundation for quantum technologies. This strategic focus on quantum computing follows the national strategy for artificial intelligence adopted in July.

The government aims to create a quantum ecosystem, develop quantum communication infrastructures, and establish specialized research centers. These initiatives are expected to generate opportunities in various sectors including agriculture, medicine, environmental protection, IT&C, and cybersecurity.

By collaborating with brilliant researchers, academia, entrepreneurs, and private sector experts, Romania is positioning itself to advance to the next level in quantum technologies, potentially becoming a significant player in this cutting-edge field.
