Jio Platforms, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries, has forged a partnership with Nvidia, a leader in GPU technology, to develop a large language model. This model will be trained to encompass the diverse languages spoken in India. This collaboration marks Reliance Industries’ foray into the rapidly expanding field, which, until now, has seen limited local competition.
The two companies will collaborate on constructing an AI infrastructure that is set to be over an order of magnitude more potent than India’s current fastest supercomputer. Reliance stated that this cloud infrastructure would grant accelerated computing capabilities to a wide spectrum of individuals in India, including researchers, developers, startups, scientists, and AI specialists.
Under the terms of the agreement, Nvidia will provide Jio with comprehensive AI supercomputer solutions, including the Nvidia GH200 Grace Hopper Superchip and Nvidia DGX Cloud. Additionally, Nvidia will supply frameworks for the development of advanced AI models. Jio, on the other hand, will assume responsibility for overseeing the AI cloud infrastructure and will manage customer interactions and access.
The majority of Indian startups and well-established local companies have traditionally concentrated on creating applications utilizing large language models developed by organizations such as OpenAI. Meanwhile, in various parts of the world, companies and nations are engaged in a competitive race to acquire coveted Nvidia chips for fueling their own extensive language models.
Reliance has embarked on a diversification journey over the past decade, venturing into various sectors, including telecommunications and video streaming. In this endeavor, Jio Platforms, supported by Meta, Google, Qualcomm, and Intel, is gradually positioning itself as a prominent technology distribution partner for numerous global titans. The company has entered into a decade-long agreement with Microsoft for the establishment of cloud data centers and the resale of various business solutions. Furthermore, in the previous month, it strengthened its partnership with Netflix.
In a separate announcement, Nvidia revealed its partnership with India’s Tata Group. This collaboration aims to provide AI training to 600,000 employees at the consultancy firm TCS, focusing on AI advancements. Additionally, the partnership involves the development of AI infrastructure in conjunction with Tata Communications.
In response to this development, New Delhi has declared that India will adopt a distinct approach by refraining from regulating the expansion of AI, diverging from the strategies pursued by numerous other nations.
