Audi is integrating ChatGPT via Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service into its infotainment system to improve voice control capabilities. Starting in July, owners of around two million Audi models made since 2021 and equipped with the third-generation modular infotainment system (MIB 3) can interact with their car using natural language. New models like the Q6 e-tron1 and future models with the E3 1.2 electronics architecture will receive ChatGPT through Cerence Chat Pro.

Enhanced Voice Control

This integration allows drivers to use voice control for the infotainment, navigation, and AC systems, and to ask general knowledge questions. This enhances safety by allowing drivers to keep their eyes on the road. The feature is enabled through Azure OpenAI Service and Cerence Inc.’s automotive-grade ChatGPT integration.

Audi Assistant Capabilities

The Audi assistant, available in models with the E3 1.2 electronics architecture like the new Audi Q6 e-tron1, can be activated by saying “Hey Audi” or using the push-to-talk button on the steering wheel. It recognizes commands to execute vehicle functions, search for destinations, or provide information like the weather forecast. When it cannot answer general knowledge questions, it forwards them to ChatGPT. All questions and answers are deleted after processing to ensure data security, and ChatGPT does not access vehicle data.

Future Potential

Audi plans to expand AI applications to allow drivers to ask specific questions about the vehicle, such as correct tire pressure. The use of large language models from Cerence will enable these advanced capabilities.

AI in Audi’s Operations

Audi is leveraging AI to improve customer experiences and optimize business processes, including design, HR, and production quality control. Recent AI innovations include AI for checking spot welds and AI-based crack detection. Audi ensures responsible AI use, complying with regulations like the EU Data Act and AI Act, and trains employees to use AI ethically and effectively.
